Federal immigration agents were in River Forest Monday and targeted landscapers and contractors. At least one landscaping person was detained by federal agents said a source in a conversation with Wednesday Journal.

There was a flurry of social media posts throughout the day and in an email to the Journal, which was later posted to the village’s social media, and River Forest police confirmed reports of federal action in the village.

“This morning, the Village of River Forest was made aware of the presence of federal immigration agents conducting enforcement actions within the community. Reports indicate that the activity targeted landscapers and contractors in the 500 and 600 blocks of Franklin Avenue,” said the email.

Other social media posters reported ICE activity on the 300 block of Franklin and on Keystone.

The police department made plain that it receives no communication or requests for coordination from the federal agencies. In its statement, the department said it did not have confirmation of the number of individuals detained or any charges which might have been filed.

The source who spoke to the Journal, and asked that their name not be used, said the person who was detained was a long-time contractor who worked frequently in River Forest.

The police department urged residents to report sightings of federal enforcement activity to the department and said, “officers will respond to observe and confirm activity.”
