I had always been impressed with the sense of community displayed by my fellow Oak Park dog owners in taking responsibility of their dogs’ “leavings,” but not any longer. On my most recent walks, I have been stunned by the mounds left in the snow and on sidewalks. I can only surmise that this may be related to the increase in dog ownership spurred by the social confinement of the pandemic, but I think the duty to pick up after your pet should be self-evident as an act of social courtesy and public hygiene. I hope that Oak Park takes appropriate steps in the forms of both information and enforcement. Postings at entrances to Austin Gardens (for example) would be a good first step.
