William F. McNichols, 95, a longtime resident of Oak Park and the 600 block of South Elmwood, died on Jan. 28, 2021. Born on Jan. 20, 1926, he was a proud World War II Navy veteran. He served on the USS Hinsdale, which was lost at Okinawa to a kamikaze attack, and he witnessed the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima. A graduate of Loyola University, he enjoyed a career in business and finance and was a longtime member of Ascension Parish.

Bill McNichols was the husband of Patricia, nee Sullivan, for 66 years; the father of Bill Jr. (Kimberly), Mary, Tim (Kathi), Jim (Rebecca) and Patty (Mark); grandfather of Brian, Caitlin, Kristin, Michael, Christopher, Hailey, James, Kevin, Daniel, Thomas, Fiona, and McKayla; great-grandfather of Cameron and Grace; and uncle of many nieces and nephews. 

A memorial Mass and celebration of Bill’s life will be planned at a future date at Ascension Church.
