The TED talks lecture series, known for highlighting innovative speakers on hundreds of topics, is coming to River Forest in May and will focus on women’s issues, according to a local organizer.
Tania Haigh, an Oak Park resident, said in a telephone interview that on Thursday, May 28, she and other organizers will hold a TEDx talk to correspond with TEDWomen, a three-day conference in Monterey, California. That event will focus on “the power of women and girls to be creators and change-makers,” according to the TED website.
Haigh said she got the idea to organize a local TEDx event late last year and applied with TED to hold the River Forest event. TEDx events are organized locally but tightly monitored by the TED organization.
“There are a lot of rules that you have to abide by,” Haigh said.
The Oak Park TEDx event will be held at Dominican University’s Martin Hall, she said.
Speakers have yet to be announced, Haigh said, but she is still looking for 3-5 speakers from the Chicago area to speak on the theme of “Momentum, moving forward, looking ahead.”
Each talk will be under 18 minutes, she said. The event also will broadcast live lectures from the TEDWomen event in California, she said.
The group of volunteers organizing the event is still looking for sponsors. To find out more about the TEDx event, visit https://www.ted.com/tedx/events/14221. Information about the TEDWomen event is available at https://www.ted.com/attend/conferences/special-events/tedwomen.
