Wednesday Journal’s combined technology and building maintenance department made an interesting discovery in the attic of the Journal’s offices Monday morning.
While searching for antiques for an upcoming renovation project, the Journal’s Graham Johnston found a pocketbook wallet sitting between two ceiling rafters. The pocketbook and its contents date back to the late 1950s. Inside were receipts, business cards, photos, stands and some clues to its original owner.
An Illinois driver’s license – then called an operator’s license – was found inside for Florence B. Stanner, born June 25, 1911. Other documents bearing Stanner’s name include a vehicle registration – for a 1956 Ford Tudor – an insurance card, and a membership card for the Women’s International Bowling Congress. Most of the items place Stanner as a resident of Berwyn, but some list a residence in Elmhurst.
The latest receipt found inside was from May 14, 1959 from Angela of Oak Park – a jewelry store in Berwyn. So one can presume the pocketbook was lost, or stolen, sometime after that last purchase.
