Tim Dennehy (OPRF ’05) missed the last month of the season with an arm injury, but he shined before that, going 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the short-season Single A Staten Island Yankees.
Dennehy started the season with 17 scoreless innings over 10 outings, but after that the former Huskie gave up nine earned runs in his last five innings (16.20 ERA), yielding 15 hits.
A promotion would elevate Dennehy to New York’s Single A affiliate in Charleston, S.C.
One step up, two back
Vasili Spanos (OPRF ’99) took a step back this year, getting released after five seasons in the Oakland organization. Spanos finished the season with the Florida Marlins’ high Single A affiliate, where he hit .271 with seven homers and 41 RBIs in 80 games.
Spanos will turn 28 by Opening Day of 2009.
In search of playing time
Caleb Fields (Fenwick ’03) struggled in limited playing time this season for the Pirates’ affiliate in the Single A Carolina League.
Fields played 15 times and had 41 at-bats, recording three hits for a .073 average. Fields missed a month with a hip injury but returned in time to add two hits in his final week.
Rough day for Cougars
Even with the sun shining, it was a dark day for the Concordia University Chicago football team as they were blown out by visiting Olivet College 59-0 at home on Saturday.
The visiting Comets rolled to the tune of 598 total yards, 374 on the ground, and eight touchdowns, as the Cougars could only muster 191 total yards and made it to the red zone just once on the day.
Concordia ran the ball 31 times for only 14 yards, and didn’t fair much better through the air, tallying 177 yards on 12-of-37 passing. The Cougars turned the ball over four times, leading to 24 Comet points.
