Tim Dennehy (OPRF, ’05) extended his season-opening scoreless streak in three games last week, bringing it to nine innings over six outings. The pitcher has yielded seven hits and a walk over that span for the short-season Single A Staten Island Yankees, while striking out three.
Spanos scatters three doubles
OPRF graduate Vasili Spanos (’99) remains with the Marlins’ high Single A Jupiter affiliate. Spanos hit three doubles last week but went 4-for-23 as his average fell to .265. Nine of Spanos’ 22 hits are for extra bases-six doubles and three homers. He has a slugging percentage of .446. Spanos has 10 RBIs in 23 games.
Fields still searching for hit
Fenwick’s Caleb Fields continues to look for his first hit; he’s 0-for-21 with the Hickory Crawdads in Single A. Fields was hitless in eight at-bats last week before sitting out the weekend and now has eight strikeouts on the year.
Compared with what he saw last year in rookie ball, “The pitching has been a lot better, not necessarily the velocity, but the location and movement,” Fields wrote in an e-mail. “As you move up, everyone’s fastball moves and people are better and better at identifying weaknesses and pitching to those exact spots.”
