It doesn’t matter that they play in different conferences, or which team has the better record. What does matter is defeating your area-rival no matter what sport you are playing.

The Fenwick soccer team did just that against Trinity (15-4-1) on Saturday at the Dominican Priory in River Forest. The Friars (7-12-1) were able to shutout the Blazers 2-0 on a day that celebrated Senior Day for Fenwick.

“I think they’ve been fired up since April for today,” said Fenwick coach Chris Richter. “Both teams look forward to it. We’ve played into other peoples’ Senior Day and it was good to play our own at home.”

Fenwick had the Blazers playing defense most of the first half. At 3:45 left in the period, Morgan Gallagher scored what proved to be the winning goal to go up 1-0. Midfielder Colleen Hussey had the assist.

“It wasn’t all me. I got the assist from Colleen. There were six of us attacking, and that’s really what made the goal,” said Gallagher about the pivotal goal.

About midway through the second half, the Blazers had a flurry of shots on goal to test the defense, especially senior goalie Katie Stutz. But Fenwick’s defense held firm and Stutz was able to post her fifth shutout of the season.

“It’s something we look forward to for the whole season,” Stutz said about the game against Trinity.

Senior Tori Frangella scored the insurance goal for the Friars with 15:11 left to play. “It sealed the deal. Molly Sutton crossed it and I was there to follow it up,” said Frangella. “It slipped past the goalie’s hands and I was there to finish it.”

Trinity was able to get off a few more shots on goal to no avail.

“They controlled the game, and we were always chasing,” said Trinity coach Dave Preston. “Our main objective today was to play a good game, be solid and work on some things to get ready for the playoffs.”

Both teams begin the Class AA State playoffs today (Wednesday). Fenwick plays away at Riverside Brookfield at 6 p.m. while Trinity meets Farragut at OPRF (4 p.m.) Depending on how the tournament shakes out, these two teams could meet again in the Lyons Sectional title game on May 22.
