The Trinity soccer team put yet another “W” in the win column with a shutout of De La Salle on Saturday.
The victory pushed the Blazers’ record to 11-2-1 with a conference mark of 4-1. This is turning out to be the program’s best season. The defense has been solid with seven shut outs, and the team took the top spot in the St Francis of Wheaton Tournament with a 3-1 win against Montini High School last week.
It didn’t matter which way the 40-mile per hour wind was blowing on Saturday for the Blazers. It always appeared to be at their backs as the team kept De La Salle on defense for both halves. The Meteors were only able to muster one good shot on goal, but Trinity goalie Adriana Preston thwarted the effort. Although Preston watched most of the game’s action from one end of the field, she credited the team’s defense overall. “I’ve had a good season, but the defense helps me out a lot,” she said.
After numerous shots on goal, Gina LaRose scored the first of her two goals for the Blazers. It was a double assist by Jill Coleman and Eleni Nikols. Nikols scored the next goal to put Trinity up 2-0 at the break. The senior commented on the role the wind played in the game, “We just had to stay together and notice the changes in the wind, the wind speed, and the way it’s going, and play the ball left to right.”
LaRose scored again midway through the second half off an assist by her twin sister, Michelle.
Alissa Hartnett and Jackie Robinson each scored goals to bring the final tally to five for the Blazers. Maggie Tansey had the assists on both of those goals.
The Blazers played Resurrection on Tuesday (after press time) in a key Girls Catholic Athletic Conference match-up.
“We have some big conference games next week,” said Trinity head coach Dave Preston. “We’re 4-1 in conference now, so it gives us a chance to finish first or second. We need to put it all together. The girls have worked very hard in the off season to put them where they are right now.”
Trinity welcomes Mt. Assisi on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. and will take on Guerin May 7 for Senior Day. Trinity’s home games are played at Triton College.
