The Fenwick boys water polo team played hosts to Gulliver Prep on Saturday, and handed the team from Coral Gables, Fla., a 12-6 loss.
Brian Barron led the Friars with four goals and three steals. Andrew McKernin finished with a hat-trick and two steals.
Chris Wendt tallied seven steals and Matt Napleton 12 saves in the victory for the Friars, who earlier in the week defeated Brother Rice 9-4. Barron and Craig Borkovec combined for six goals in that win, while McKernin added two goals and six steals.
On April 2, Fenwick crushed St. Viator 27-3. John Pavlik led the onslaught with four goals, while Will Rigali and Mark Ryden added three goals apiece.
Softball blasts Montini in Game 2
After falling 5-3 in the doubleheader opener against Montini, the Fenwick softball team responded with a flurry of runs to capture a 21-5 win in the nightcap on Saturday.
Angelica Sanchez got the Friars (3-3, 0-2) on the board in Game 2 with a three-run double in the first. Singles by Natalie Marotta, Courtney Monaco, Bridget Ellsworth, Sanchez, Laura Enriquez, Casey Madden and a double by Lauren Donati in the fourth sealed the win.
Donati finished 3-for-3 in the game with a triple, two doubles and three runs scored.
Marotta earned her first win on the season by giving up just five runs on two hits in five innings.
The Friars host area-rival Trinity on Thursday before traveling to Marist on Saturday.
Huskies take second at tourney
The OPRF girls water polo team finished runner-up at the St. Charles North Tournament on Saturday.
The Huskies, who had to miss Thursday night’s game at Neuqua Valley because of an accident involving their bus en route to the game, went 2-1 at the tournament.
Audrey Reardon totaled 15 goals in the three games, including six in OPRF’s 8-4 opening win against the host. Kati Pedersen scored a goal in all three games, and Vicki Maslowski tallied 25 blocks for the Huskies. OPRF (10-5-1) downed Northside Prep 9-3 but fell to Lincoln-Way East 6-5 in the title game.
Fenwick falls to Gulliver
The Fenwick girls water polo team fell 11-6 to Gulliver Prep on Saturday.
Morgan Bonk and Lisett Calderon both finished with a pair of goals for the Friars, while Mariclaire Bresnahan had 10 saves.
Tennis serves up seconds
The Fenwick tennis team placed second at the Rolling Meadows Invitational on Saturday.
In the 16-player singles draw Mike Pill placed third and Rob Hickey fifth overall.
In doubles, Ed Crane and Tyler Kiefer placed fifth and Dominic Campagna and Matt Hipskind placed ninth. Crane and Kiefer, unseeded, opened with an upset of the No. 5 seed from Naperville Central, then lost 7-5, 6-4 to St. Charles East, the eventual champions.
The Friars travel to Glenbard West on Saturday.
Coach ties Kaiser’s record
Dave Swisegood, 77, a high school baseball coach for Central Southeastern High School in Augusta, tied Jack Kaiser’s record for most career wins in Illinois high school baseball history with 892 last week.
Kaiser coached at OPRF from 1953 until his death in 2000.
