The Trinity basketball team closed out its bumpy regular season last week with a victory over Nazareth and a loss to Marian Catholic.

The Blazers (18-6) fell to a non-ranked team for the first time all season with the 62-47 loss to Marian Catholic. The Spartans were coming off a disappointing two-point loss to conference rival Providence the game before, and they were hungry for the win.

Thursday’s pre-game had a ceremony to honor Trinity’s seniors: Kelly O’Brien, Toni Carter, Bridget Kloak and Gina Consiglio. They all started the game for the Blazers. Both teams got off to a slow start with the Spartans up 6-4 at the end of the first period. It was a precursor of things to come for the Blazers. They held only one brief lead in the game. The Spartans then rattled off 14 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding lead at half, 31-14.

The second half saw the Blazers trying to close the gap. They got within 10 points with 4:30 to go, but Marian kept getting buckets to squash any rally. Monica Albano hit three treys in the second half for the Blazers, but none sparked a run. Senior Katy Clark had an outstanding game for Marian, leading all players on the floor with 24 points. Albano finished with 14 points, and Lykendra Johnson had another double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with her three blocked shots. Toni Carter came close with 10 points and nine rebounds for Trinity.

“We have to be more patient and focus in to help one another out. We all know it’s a team effort,” said Carter after the game.

The Blazers had a much better outcome earlier in the week, downing Nazareth 46-35. Both March Smith and Albano got some good looks at the basket. Smith lit up the court with 18 points, while Albano chipped in 12 points.

Trinity will now focus on the Class AA State tournament. Trinity and Fenwick both host regional contests. Trinity is expected to host area-rival OPRF tomorrow night (Thursday night) for the River Forest Regional title. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
