Shawn Goebel was always an unabashedly outspoken member of our philosophy class. His frankness and his defiant attitude-he wondered aloud if questions about the meaning of life weren’t the purview of people in wealthy countries who had nothing better to do-made it seem perfectly natural when, about two weeks before the end of school, Goebel waltzed into philosophy 30 minutes late and announced he was joining Americorps.
