I remember when Happy Apple Pie Shop opened because it was during my campaign for Oak Park trustee, 10 years ago.

I just read that the founder, Michelle Mascaro, is retiring. Michelle has been an inspiration to many, including me, and a respected leader in social entrepreneurship. She created far more than jobs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Happy Apple Pie Shop is a workplace where people with and without disabilities work side by side, experiencing a genuine sense of purpose and belonging. That is rare and special in any workplace.

As Michelle retires, I want to thank her publicly for the vision, determination, and care she brought to Happy Apple Pie Shop. Her work will have generational impact, and hopefully serve as a model for future mission-driven entrepreneurs.

I am glad to see her legacy continue under Easterseals, and I wish her a peaceful and well-deserved retirement.

Oak Park village trustee, 2017-2021
