At the IHSA state finals in DeKalb, May 16-17, OPRF finished tied for 41st with 0.5 points.

After losing their first-round match 10-21, 11-21 against Stevenson’s Katie May and Nivedya Nair, seniors Anika Gupta and Alice Cadwell defeated Nastiya Huida and Natalia Sokalska of Buffalo Grove 21-12, 21-17 in the first match of the consolation bracket. The duo, however, was eliminated in the second consolation round, falling to Ava Trendl and Macey Phillips of Lincoln-Way East 25-27, 19-21.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Anika and Alice,” said OPRF coach Paul Wright. “They fought to the end and had a chance to make it to the next level.”

The Huskies’ other doubles entry, juniors Stella Ludwig and Olive Tepher, went winless at state, losing their first-round match to Ann Chiu and Alice Pan of New Trier 19-21, 10-21, then the first consolation match to Prospect’s Ashley Smith and Colleen Shute 6-21, 8-21.

“Olive and Stella got some great experience,” Wright said, “and saw what the next level looks like.”

He added, “All four of these girls attended our camps as freshmen and had no prior badminton experience. They worked hard and had the opportunity to go downstate. This clearly shows their determination and commitment to badminton and themselves. They’re excellent role models for our program.”
