Like many residents, I have been following the discussion surrounding the proposed changes to single-family zoning and the village board’s scheduled July 28 vote. This represents a significant decision about the future of our community, and regardless of where residents stand on the proposal itself, a decision of this magnitude deserves meaningful public participation.
I appreciate that our village board is reviewing expert analysis and considering ways to address housing challenges. Thoughtful planning is important, and housing affordability and accessibility are issues many communities are facing. However, expert recommendations and previous board decisions should not replace the voice of the residents who live here today.
Changes to residential zoning have the potential to affect the character of our neighborhoods, property values, and the way our community develops for generations. These are not minor adjustments; they are decisions that will shape the future identity of our village.
Recently, our community was given the chance to vote on a proposal involving funding for an indoor pool because it represented a significant investment in our future. A change that could fundamentally affect residential zoning deserves that same level of consideration.
This is not about opposing progress or ignoring the need for thoughtful housing solutions. It is about ensuring that the people affected by these decisions have a meaningful voice in determining the direction of their community.
If this proposal truly has broad support among residents, allowing the community to vote on it would strengthen its credibility and provide a clear mandate moving forward.
