While I have raised concerns about the effect of the end of single-family zoning in Oak Park, I believe that there is an even greater problem with this proposed change. The elimination of single-family zoning makes no requirement that a percentage of any new housing built under this change be truly affordable housing.

I have great concern that, without such guarantees, multifamily housing built in the former footprint of a single-family home will conform to the profit motive, not community values and concern for the unhoused and under-housed, much less than residents in the “missing middle.”
