All along Lake Street, and elsewhere, are traffic signals that most drivers and pedestrians honor, except for one. At many a corner, when the car traffic has a green signal to proceed, for a short while the pedestrian signal is an orange hand indicating: WAIT. It’s ignored by many a walker. All they see is the green light. Why doesn’t the signal just flash, “Don’t walk.” I’ve seen many a frustrated driver (and walker) startled by this confusing signal as they both proceed through the intersection.
