Morgan Scott Lewis, 44, of Oak Park, died peacefully on Jan. 11, 2026, following complications of intracerebral hemorrhage and hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Born Michael David Hargrove on Feb. 27, 1981, in Waukegan, Morgan was adopted days after birth by Lillian Morgan-Lewis and Augustus Eugene Lewis, who raised him with deep love and devotion. He grew up as the younger brother of Dr. Kelly Lewis-Arthur, with whom he shared a lifelong bond, marked by loyalty, humor, and quiet understanding.

From an early age, Morgan’s brilliance and curiosity were unmistakable. An avid reader, he became known for his sharp memory, thoughtful perspective, and love of spirited debate. His interests ranged widely, including history, government, Buddhist study, music, and popular culture. Just as notable as his intellect was his empathy and ability to make others feel genuinely seen and respected.

Morgan attended Lincoln School in Oak Park and graduated from Latin School of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Government from Georgetown University, where he was a member of the NCAA Division 1 Track & Field team. He later completed graduate degrees at DePaul University (MA) and Dominican University (MS).

Morgan devoted his professional life to service, learning, and community. He worked for more than a decade in public and academic libraries throughout Chicago, most recently as a reference librarian at the Harold Washington Library Center. He also served as head track & field coach at Latin School and spent many years at YMCA Camp Pendalouan and Camp Eberhart, where his influence endures.

Above all, he cherished relationships. Friends from every chapter of life became his chosen family. One of his most treasured roles was uncle to Ellie-Simone Arthur, lovingly known as “Uncle Morgie.”

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ellie-Simone Arthur’s college fund.

Morgan’s life was one of quiet brilliance, deep integrity, and enduring love. He will be deeply missed.
