I’m writing to add my voice to Rachel Lada’s recent letter regarding who participates on sports teams in the middle schools. My son’s experience at OPRF left me wondering why only some kids get to participate when we all pay the taxes that support every public school program. Only the very skilled get the benefits of being on a team, being coached, and enjoying playing an organized sport. Everyone else is turned away. In academics, it would be like telling every student who’s not in AP classes to go home.

I suggest intramurals instead of highly selective teams that deprive most kids of the benefits of organized sport.
