
Jewel Edward Butler, 86, died peacefully at his home in St. Augustine, Florida, surrounded by loved ones, on Dec. 13, 2025. Known affectionately as “Buddy” to many, he lived a life of selfless service, touching countless lives with his warmth, guidance, and unwavering love.
Born on Sept. 20, 1939, in Danville, Illinois, to Jewel Cosby Butler and Magnolia Butler, he grew up rooted in the values of hard work and family. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, earning the lasting title of veteran that he carried with deep honor. After his service, Jewel pursued higher education, graduating from the University of Illinois in June 1972. He then dedicated his career to the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he became assistant director, using his compassion, fairness, and leadership to guide many toward better paths in life.
Beyond his professional life, he mentored youth as a coach for the Aurora Flyers track team, finding great joy in working with young men and fostering their potential. A loving husband for 45 years to his best friend and devoted wife, Andreen Neukranz-Butler, he was the heart of his family. His quiet strength and kindness will be missed. He was a resident of Oak Park for 30 years.
Jewel was the proud father of Jane Kmetz, Francine Butler, Andrea Butler, Maria Hoye, Suzanne Hunter, Jewel Adrian Butler, Jewel Ashley Butler, Kira Fobbs, and Heather Drawhorn; grandfather of Julian Butler, Terrin Harris, Kelsey Carroll, Jayden Hunter, Hailey Elmore, Londyn Butler, Mikala Hunter, Cole McKeever, Tres Drawhorn, Jewel Dawson Butler, Danika Kmetz, Isabel Kmetz, and Lauren Kmetz Weisman.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jewel Ashley Butler; his brother, Truman Butler; his sister Maria Miller; and his parents.
A memorial service celebration will be held in Illinois and will be announced at a later date. Flowers are welcome, and donations in his memory may be made to a veterans organization or youth mentoring program, honoring his lifelong commitment to service and the next generation.
A beautifully amazing man, Jewel “Buddy” Edward Butler will be missed forever.
