An alleged threat in April directed toward Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School on the social media platform Snapchat, was deemed not credible. But it still resulted in the presence of additional Oak Park police near the school last Thursday and Friday, with no incidents reported either day.
Brooks Middle School is at 325 S. Kenilworth Ave.
“Yes, the police department was aware of the incident,” the department said in a statement Thursday. “After speaking with all parties involved and conducting a thorough investigation, OPPD has determined there is no substantial basis for a threat.
“However, as a precaution, patrol officers will be visibly present at Brooks Middle School for dismissal today, as well as during arrival and dismissal tomorrow. The police have maintained communication with school officials throughout,” read the statement.
In a communication to district families the week of April 27, Oak Park Elementary School District 97 stated that, “We want to emphasize that we have no information indicating specific dates for any planned actions and believe these are rumors.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have coordinated with the Oak Park Police Department to have patrols in the area on May 1 and May 2. Additionally, we will have increased administrative support at the school during this time.”
A district spokesperson said that on April 16, the middle school received reports of an alleged threat via Snapchat, which resulted in a “thorough investigation,” including working with Oak Park police and interviewing several students. Police also followed up with the individuals involved.
“While the threat was determined not to be credible, we continue to work with law enforcement to ensure comprehensive investigations and appropriate follow-up measures whenever a safety concern is reported to our schools,” the spokesperson said.
