The OPRF, Fenwick, and Trinity varsity girls lacrosse programs have started their seasons, each having played at least one match so far. Here’s how the teams are shaping up:
OPRF
The Huskies began their season 2-1, with victories at St. Laurence (19-8) and Hersey (14-8) along with an overtime loss at St. Viator (8-7).
“With so many returning starters, leadership is definitely our strength,” said eighth-year OPRF head coach James Borja. “They are competitive in practice and push each other.”
OPRF has 10 starters back from last year’s team, which finished 13-9-1. Three returning seniors made last year’s West Suburban Silver All-Conference team and also got all-sectional honors: midfielder Kelsey O’Brien (52 goals, 16 assists), attacker/midfielder Hannah Simon (90 goals, state-high 74 assists), and attacker/midfielder Harper Thompson (80 goals, 8 assists). Additionally, Simon was named to the Illinois Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association All-State First Team, while Thompson was placed on the Second Team.
Other returnees are senior defenders Siena Alfonsi, Ella Callero, Caroline Mann, and Rosie Ondrla; senior attackers Patterson Grant and Violet Plotkin; and junior attacker Tess Cronin. The Huskies’ top newcomers are junior goalie Megan Dauphinee and senior midfielder Claire Detmer.
“We know we will get everyone’s best effort this season,” Borja said. “If we can stay consistent with our effort and execution, we will see a lot of success this year.”
OPRF faces Benet Academy at the Oak Brook Park District, April 10, then hosts Fenwick in the new track and field stadium, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. The Huskies’ usual home, Oak Park Stadium, is unavailable due to construction related to the school’s Imagine Project Two; a green energy system containing 270 geothermal walls that will connect to the new physical education facility is being built beneath the stadium’s surface.
Fenwick
The Friars are 1-2 this season, with the victory coming against Whitney Young, 15-0, on March 17.
“We are so blessed to have such a great group of girls,” said sixth-year Fenwick head coach Tracy Bonaccorsi. “Our lacrosse IQ is one of our strengths; almost the entire team averages straight A’s, so they make it very easy for me to teach and prep them for each game as the season progresses.”
Fenwick has 12 returnees from last year’s squad that went 10-7, including senior attacker Katy Berni (28 goals, 5 assists in 2024), who made the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference all-conference team, along with senior midfielder Sade Rucker (team-leading 34 goals, 11 assists) and senior goalie Lily De La Torre, each of whom got all-sectional honors.
Other returnees are sophomore midfielder Tessa Timpone, junior midfielders Kate and Maddy Cox, junior defender Emma Kure, senior defenders June McMahon and Olivia Tsitovich, and senior attackers Margaret Gibbs, Kate Williams, and Lauren Wilson. The Friars’ top newcomers are freshman Giuliana Gutierrez, sophomore defender Giada DeCola, sophomore attacker Emma LaChance, junior defenders Emilia Krason and Gia Vizzini, and junior attacker Addison Boehm.
“Our keys to success are sticking together, staying positive, staying healthy, and remaining focused on the task at hand,” Bonaccorsi said. “We will continue to learn, grow, and improve as our season picks up in hopes of peaking at the right time before playoffs.”
Trinity
The Blazers have had just one match this season — an 18-1 loss to Lane Tech on March 18. With the next game set for April 9 versus Wheaton St. Francis, head coach Jim Moy hopes the lengthy time off helps his team.
“We have a lot of speedier players,” said Moy, in his 21st season leading the program. “We need to work on advanced stick skills.”
Trinity returns 11 players from last year’s 6-14 team, including two who made the GCAC all-conference team: senior midfielder Kate Olivo (29 goals, 21 assists in ’24) and senior attacker Rian Smith (55 goals, 14 assists), who also garnered all-sectional honors.
Other returnees are senior attackers Sasha Goodman (21 goals, 7 assists), Natalie Arellano, and Leah Zaloudek; senior defenders Ashlyn Lockey, Sarah Santos, and Charlotte Stec; sophomore midfielder Lucy Treese, and sophomore goalies Kiera Gale and Scarlett Pawlowski. Trinity’s top newcomers are sophomore midfielders Maddie Chabura, Mae DeGroff, and Briana Gonzalez, and sophomore attacker Abby Flinn.
“We need to work on (our) passing and catching skills in our settled offense,” said Moy, who added that there needs to be “lots of repetitions during practices.”
