Two water mains have broken in Oak Park over the last week as temperatures have dipped below 10 degrees.
On Tuesday afternoon, residents reported a water main break on the 100 block of South Kenilworth Avenue. Crews began to repair the break around 3 p.m., with the work closing off Pleasant Street between Kenilworth Avenue and Clinton Avenue for hours, Oak Park Chief Communications Officer Dan Yopchick told Wednesday Journal.
Resident Stacy Wettstein took video of the incident, as water flowed from a sewer drain and flooded the adjacent sidewalk.
Yopchick said that village staff have not been overwhelmed by water issues amid the recent freeze.
“There have been other water main breaks, however, there has not been a noticeable influx during the colder-than-normal weather this week,” Yopchick said.
Another water main had broken days earlier on Feb. 12 on the 800 block of Fair Oaks Avenue, he said.
The freezing temperatures put extra pressure on pipes. There were 190 water-on-street complaints last month in the City of Chicago, according to CBS news.
