
Robert Rath, 83, father, grandfather, educator, and member of the Oak Park community, died peacefully on Jan. 3, 2025. Born in 1941 in Chicago, he overcame a challenging childhood to lead a life defined by resilience, creativity, and generosity.
Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, he owned a 7-Eleven and Melissa’s Deli in Oak Park, where he became a familiar and friendly face in the community. Later, he found his true calling as an educator, working for many years in the Chicago Public Schools, particularly at Von Humboldt Elementary. He had a special gift for working with students who faced behavioral challenges, offering them patience, understanding, and guidance.
Robert was formerly married to Roxanne Rath, with whom he raised four children: Melissa, Justin, Annie, and Alex. He was the proud grandfather of six, who brought him immense joy, and is survived by his children, grandchildren, and brothers, John and Ron. He was predeceased by his younger sister, Judy.
In his later years, he battled dementia, a journey that showcased his strength and determination.
