Hamburger Mary’s, the popular drag queen-themed restaurant in Chicago that is working to open a location in Oak Park, was shut down by the city on Tuesday for multiple health code violations, according to the Chicago online news source DNAinfo.com.
The news site reports that the Andersonville restaurant was cited by the Chicago Department of Public Health for the presence of mouse droppings on all three levels of the building at 5400 N. Clark Street.
The city report also charges the restaurant with storing food at improperly high temperatures; failing to protect food from contamination; and heavy grease accumulation; among others, according to DNAinfo.com.
Co-owner Ashley Wright tells the news organization that he is working to fix the problems and hopes to reopen sometime later this week.
Hamburger Mary’s plans to open a restaurant in Oak Park later this year and is currently doing a gut rehab of the building at its new location at 155 S. Oak Park Ave. In addition to the burger restaurant in Oak Park, Wright and company also plan to open a brew pub, Oak Park Brewing Co., next door to the burger restaurant.
