A favorite Frank Lloyd Wright-related trivia question is, “Who invented Lincoln Logs?” No, the iconic kids’ toy from childhood (if you’re of a certain age), was not invented by Frank Lloyd, but by his son, John Lloyd Wright.
Reportedly, he was inspired by the log cabin of Lincoln’s childhood (we don’t know what toys Abe played with, but we do know he read a lot of books).
Anyway, according to Consumerist.com, the logs are coming back to the U.S. after being made in China for a number of years. The logs will now be produced in a factory in central Maine, the article said, though some of the plastic pieces will continue to come from China.
J.L. Wright invented the toy in 1916 and, according to the article, have always been made of wood, so Maine is probably a good place to produce them.
According to Wikipedia, John and his father had a back-and-forth relationship, but he did work as an architect, in addition to his toy inventions. He was only 24 when he came up with Lincoln Logs, which was his most successful toy. It was one of the original inductees to the National Toy Hall of Fame.
