As many volleyball teams in the West Suburban (Silver) Conference attempt to build a starting lineup with players between 6-foot-5 and 6-8 in height, the OPRF volleyball squad and head coach Don August are putting a value on versatility.

The Huskies may only average between 6-1 and 6-4, but the team is trying to make up for that shortage of height with solid skills.

“We don’t have the size in every position that other teams have, but the wide-range of skills and abilities of many of the guys will definitely help us overcome that height disadvantage,” coach Don August stated.

The relative height disadvantage had no effect on the Huskies 2011 campaign, as they defeated St. Ignatius in the sectional championship and finished with a record of 27-13. The Huskies were eliminated in the opening round of the IHSA State Tournament by Naperville North.

Last season’s team was led by former Huskies Ben Wilks, Owen Brady, D.J. Valenti, and Will Kemper. This season the Huskies hope to replace that group of players with another talented cadre of seniors. The team and coaching staff expect key contributions from setters Diego Rodriguez and Mark Carioscio, middle blocker Ethan Thomas, and outside hitter Dan Kemper. The four seniors bring experience and ball skills to the squad looking to repeat the success of the previous season.

August said of his seniors, “We have a strong group this season. We will rely on their experience and leadership to carry our team.”

Although August expects his returning players to carry most of the load, the Huskies will count on step-up performances from several new players as well.

These important newcomers include juniors Ryan Ebersole, John Callahan and senior George Burgi, who has earned a starting spot at middle blocker after a year as a reserve. The group of fresh new faces will add to the team’s depth and versatility.

The Huskies are expected to be tested by a tough slate of conference rivals. The odds on favorites are Glenbard West, the retooled Downers Grove North, and the always competitive Lyons Township.

August said he has high hopes for his squad to not only win conference but to win the sectional and return to the state tournament.

“I expect nothing less than challenging for the conference title and winning our sectional,” he said. “We have the talent and athleticism to achieve those goals.”
