How cute is she? Laura Howell, Manager of Spex

On the hunt for a new pair of Sunnies?  Just because it’s 28 degrees out and we’re the farthest away from Summer as possible, doesn’t mean the sun stops shining!

It’s curious what style of sunglasses one chooses, and how it reflects their personality.  The other day, my very chic girlfriend, Julie was glowing over the new Betsy Johnson sunglasses she had scored, ‘they are huge & round, I look like the Sleestack!”, the cyborg -lizards from 1980‘s children’s show.

Sunglasses have a many variety of uses: to block out harmful UV rays of course, but I view them, and regular glasses as the ultimate style accessory!  They give you the courage to face the day, when your eyes are allergy affected, or perhaps fabricate an edgy quality to an otherwise ordinary face?  Which brings me to my Style tip of the week: glorious glasses & shades from Spex, on Oak Park Ave. With an eye Doctor on staff and unbeatable customer service, this shop is a destination for all things eyes.

Spex Chicago, Oak Park location opened in March of 2011, offering handmade artistry eye wear frames and a unique offering of Sunglasses. “The sun is closer to the earth in Winter, and the snow can cause glare, so it’s just as important to protect our eyes this time of year”, informs Laura Howell, shop manager and licensed Optician.  A few months ago, I brought in an older pair of shades with a loose lens; both screws were replaced free of charge and I left with a cleaning kit in my hand!  They will outfit you in a variety of cool glasses options, or fill an existing prescription; with a mission to provide International design and local style.

Check out the cute glasses Laura is wearing from OGI; protect your peepers in the classic Aviators from Oliver Peoples; or the stylized Aviators from Maui Jim.  Oversized frames are in high fashion, from Tom Ford, you can find at Spex Hinsdale.  You can not be out shinned by the round oversized number with leopard print, from Lafont; or the cheeky red cat-eye frames from Beausoleil; and once again enjoying popularity, the classic Wayfarer in tortoise, from Ray Ban.

One last thing I love about this company beyond its unique product mix: Spex has an Art & Vision program providing gallery space for local artists.  Head on in for a new pair of shades that will match any winter wardrobe and stay in your accessories rotation straight through to summer!
