Retail theft

Octavius Taylor, 39, of the 5000 block of W. Ferdinand in Chicago, was arrested at a location on the 300 block of Madison on Aug. 21 and charged with retail theft. The charge was raised to a felony because of prior convictions on Taylor’s record.

Arsenio Martinez, 38, was arrested for retail theft after he removed two packages of Huggies diapers from the Jewel Food Store on the 7500 block of Lake, Aug. 26. Estimated loss is $20.

A woman was observed loading baby formula into her backpack and the backpack of an 8-year-old juvenile in Dominick’s Finer Foods on the 7500 block of North Avenue, Aug. 28. When the store manager attempted to stop the offenders, they were able to get around him and fled the scene, leaving their backpacks. There was no loss reported, but the merchandise found in the backpacks totaled approximately $265.

A man was observed on surveillance video removing a pain reliever and a package of cold medicine from the shelf of a store located on the 200 block of Lake on Aug. 26. The offender then placed the items in his pockets and exited the store without paying. Loss is unknown.

Two males were observed exiting a white four-door vehicle and entering a business on the 7000 block of W. Roosevelt on Aug. 27. The offenders went to the liquor section of the store and placed an unknown number of liquor bottles into two backpacks. They then walked out of the store without paying. Estimated loss is unknown.

Residential burglary

A Macbook Pro laptop computer, a Wii video game console, miscellaneous Wii games, $5 in change and a silver 21-speed Fuji Crosstown bicycle were removed from a residence on the 200 block of S. Scoville, Aug. 22, after an unknown offender entered the residence by means of an unlocked rear door. Estimated loss is $2,405.

Two screen windows were damaged, two wooden shutters broken, one pane of window glass removed and a 9-millimeter revolver of an unknown brand taken from a residence on the 200 block of S. Cuyler, Aug. 23. Estimated loss is $1,650.

An antique doll collection was removed from a residence on the 200 block of S. Marion, Aug. 22-23. The unknown offender used a pry-type tool to gain entry into the residence. Loss is unknown at this time.

Someone entered an apartment located on the 700 block of N. Austin, Aug. 25, by means of breaking the bathroom window. Once inside, the offender removed a 50-inch Samsung flat-screen television and $240 in cash from a shoebox in the victim’s bedroom. Estimated loss is $1,340.

Three computers, two cameras, and jewelry were removed from a residence located on the 600 block of S. Humphrey on Aug. 26. Estimated loss is $1,840.

Criminal damage to property

Laminated paper signs on a fence surrounding a construction site on the 900 block of N. Ridgeland were damaged, Aug. 22, after an unknown offender lit them on fire. Estimated loss due to damage is $100.

Someone entered the women’s bathroom at a location on the 1000 block of S. Lombard, Aug. 22-23, pulled a porcelain sink away from the drywall and then threw the sink on the floor, causing it to break. Estimated loss is $300.

Battery arrest

Michael J. Robertson, 25, was arrested, Aug. 24, and charged with three counts of felony aggravated battery and one count of theft of services after an incident on the eastbound Metra train at the River Forest train station on the 7900 block of Hawthorne. Robertson allegedly tried run out of the train at the River Forest stop without paying his fare. When two conductors tried to stop him, he pushed both of them and spit on them.

Theft of motor vehicle

A white 1995 Pontiac Transport was removed from a location on the 6100 block of Roosevelt, Aug. 23, by unknown means. Estimated loss is $2,000.

A silver 2010 Volkswagen Jetta four-door was removed from a location on the 100 block of S. Elmwood, Aug. 24-25. Estimated loss is $12,000.

Theft from person

Someone distracted a victim on the 500 block of S. Maple, Aug. 23, and removed the victim’s black Mesmerize 1500 cellphone. Estimated loss is $300.

Theft from motor vehicle

A cord that secured the spare tire to a vehicle parked on the 1000 block of S. Oak Park Ave. was cut sometime between Aug. 13 and 20, and the spare tire was removed and the tire pressure sensor damaged. Estimated loss is $1,200.

Theft

A green BMX bicycle was removed from the rear stairwell of a location on the 400 block of N. Humphrey, Aug. 22-23. Estimated loss is $250.

A silver Apple iPod Touch was removed from a backpack left unattended at a location on the first block of Lake on Aug. 19. Estimated loss is $270.

Burglary to motor vehicle

Passenger side windows were broken on two vehicles parked on the 700 block of North Blvd., Aug. 23-24. Once inside, an unknown offender removed a gas charge card from the glove compartments of each vehicle. Estimated loss is $600.

The front passenger door window to a blue 2010 Volkswagen Jetta four-door parked on the 700 block of South Blvd. was broken on Aug. 25, and the glove box ransacked. A black backpack containing a black Nikon camera and accessories and a 50-inch silver Macbook Pro laptop computer was removed. Estimated loss is $9,750.

Burglary

A yellow Cannondale road bicycle, a green Schwinn road bicycle, a Dewalt skill saw, and an air compressor were removed from a garage on the 1000 block of S. Humphrey, Aug. 23-24, after an unknown offender used a pry-type tool to defeat the lock on the side service door.

Someone broke into a large red freight storage container in the rear of a location on the 6400 block of North Ave., Aug. 26-27. Once inside, the offender removed a Graco line sprayer, a red tool box containing electrical tools, a weed whacker, and a power washer. Estimated loss is $3,620.

These items were obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, Aug. 23-29, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
