Fred A. Cafasso

Fred A. Cafasso, Ph.D., 81, an Oak Park resident for over 50 years, died on May 19, 2011. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he was a graduate of Long Island University and New York University where he received his Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry. A former senior scientist and administrator at Argonne National Laboratory for 37 years, he was a senior chemist, research group leader, associate director of the Chemical Technology Division and deputy division director of the Chemistry Division. Dr. Cafasso was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, New York Academy of Sciences and Sigma Xi, the Research Society of America.

He was on the board of the American Parkinson Disease Foundation, served as an usher at St. Giles Church for many years, and was a former member of the Nineteenth Century Club.

Fred Cafasso was the husband of Louise Cafasso for 49 years; the father of Elene Cafasso (Keith) Mahnken and Lynda Cafasso (Stephen) Conroy; and the grandfather of Maria Elena Mahnken, David Fred Conroy and the late Joshua Conroy.

Funeral services were held on May 21 and a Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Giles Church on May 22, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.
