All indications are that there will be a solid if not overwhelming voter turnout for today’s River Forest referendum on an $8 million park district bond issue.

Visits to the village’s 10 precincts indicated that as of 2:30 p.m., more than 1,600 ballots – and possibly more – had been cast.

Those totals reflect actual counts of 1,320 and an estimated 230 early or absentee ballots. The estimated figure of 1,600-plus votes is based on three precincts counted at 9 a.m. and not updated mid-afternoon.

The polls close at 7 p.m.

Several people, who asked not to be named, said there was a heavy turnout of older voters during the early morning hours, and that the park district referendum seemed to be driving the turnout.
