With almost two full games of the 2007-08 season in the books, the Fenwick football team finally got on the scoreboard.
Senior running back Colin Tobin surged across the goal line for the Friars to start the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as Fenwick fell 30-6 to Providence Saturday afternoon at Morton West.
Tobin’s 2-yard scamper was one of the few highlights for the Friars (0-2). The senior finished with minus 7 yards on 10 rushes, compared to Celtics (1-1) running back Sean Lindbloom, who gashed the Fenwick defense for 203 yards on 27 carries, including touchdown runs of three and 21 yards.
“We played a lot better than last week,” Tobin said, comparing Saturday to Fenwick’s 27-0 loss to Hubbard in the season opener. “We’re definitely working out a few kinks. We’re still a really young team. They’re getting used to pressure playing and I definitely think there was a huge improvement.”
Fenwick was still very alive at the end of the second quarter, trailing 9-0 after a Celtics field goal, 11-yard TD pass, and missed extra point.
The Friars drove deep into Celtics territory on the strength of a 24-yard hookup between quarterback Mike Androwich and receiver Patrick Cahill. But an illegal receiver penalty and fumble by Androwich derailed any scoring opportunity.
A roughing the passer penalty breathed new life into Providence’s first drive of the second half, which was capped off with a 3-yard TD run by Drew Abernathy (63 yards on 7 carries). Providence scored on the next possession to put the game out of reach.
“The one penalty that killed the whole game was the roughing the passer penalty,” said Fenwick coach Joe DiCanio. “It’s a 9-0 score. We stop them on their first possession, and we’re still in the ballgame. That penalty turned the whole momentum of the game around.”
Penalties and miscues often derailed Fenwick scoring chances as the Friars notched five penalties for 40 yards.
Kicker/quarterback Dominick Campagna came on in relief of an ineffective Androwich, who finished the first half 6-for-18 for 69 yards, with an interception and a fumble.
Campagna guided the lone scoring drive, going 3-for-4 for 58 yards, but broke a bone in his left hand, likely ending his season, DiCanio said. He refused to go to the hospital after the injury and still attempted the extra point on the lone TD, which he missed.
Michael Rosemeyer also saw playing time at quarterback in the second half. DiCanio said the team will make a decision on who will start next week.
Fenwick quarterbacks were under constant pressure Saturday, getting sacked at least five times, constantly hurried, fumbling once and throwing two interceptions.
“Starting out with Hubbard and Providence is a tough schedule,” Tobin said. “That can really get to you. You start out 0-2 and a lot of teams would be down, but we’re going to go back to work and work harder…I definitely think we could take conference.”
Fenwick travels to Bishop Noll High School Saturday to take on St. Francis DeSales at 1:30 p.m.
