On July 26, both Chicago newspapers reported that the City of Chicago may start using cameras to catch speeders on side streets. Chicago already uses cameras at dangerous Chicago intersections to catch individuals running red lights.
The proposed ordinance would allow speeders caught by cameras in mobile radar equipped vans to be ticketed. According to the article, in Paradise Valley Arizona, “a camera system issues 19 speeding tickets to every one written by police.”
I sent copies of this article to the village president, the village trustees, the village manager, the village clerk and the Chief of Police. I urged our village officials to implement a program similar to the City of Chicago.
Anyone that drives in the village is aware of the dangerous driving habits that are so pervasive. Speeding, ignoring stop signs, and outright reckless driving are on the upswing. Use of today’s technology would be a tremendous deterrent to the drivers who now routinely ignore the law and safe driving habits. Further, a camera system would eliminate concerns of racial profiling and free up police officers for other duties.
I am hopeful that Wednesday Journal will support the implementation of a camera system. I urge my fellow Oak Parkers to speak out in favor of this initiative. Contact your village trustees with your comments. A camera system will improve the quality of life and make the Village of Oak Park a safer place to live.
