While he wasn’t exactly known for doing many jaw-dropping slam dunks when he graced the hardwood at OPRF High School — we’d say Gabe Levin owns that distinction nowadays — it appears Iman Shumpert will take to the air in the Sprite Slam Dunk contest during the NBA’s All-Star weekend.

Do you have some free time to read this feature story on Emery Lehman? Yeah? Great. Settle in, get comfortable, but note, spare time? It's overrated. Chances are Lehman himself won't have the time to read his own feature story. Or maybe the 15-year-old sophomore at OPRF High School will pick up this article and read it on the way up to Milwaukee, where he goes three times a week.

Before the Fenwick girls basketball team took on area-rival Trinity on Tuesday night (after print deadline) in the Class 4A semifinal of the Lyons Sectional, the Friars slipped past St. Ignatius 70-69 to win their 17th-straight regional championship.

Fenwick's Matt Garelli is headed back to state. The senior, who won the Class 3A State Meet at 103 pounds last season, qualified for state by outlasting Cameron Kennedy of Richmond Burton in overtime to win the 120-pound weight division at the Class 2A Grayslake Central Sectional on Saturday.

It wasn't the type of ending to a regular season the Fenwick girls basketball team had hoped for on Saturday afternoon. The Friars (20-9, 6-3) dropped their final regular season game against their East Suburban Catholic Conference rival Marian Catholic 62-48 at Fenwick.

After Saturday afternoon's emphatic 58-35 win for the OPRF boys basketball team over Lyons Township, Huskies 6-foot-7 star center Gabe Levin was besieged with autograph requests from kids, high fives from classmates, and he even conducted an interview with Comcast which televised the game as its "Game of the Week."

Sprawled out on my couch with a belly full of greasy potato chips mixed with about seven Oreo cookies, washed down with a diet Pepsi, I was whining about a sore knee, a stretched Achilles tendon and a jammed thumb I suffered while playing basketball.

If you’ve been watching the Bulls, you’ve been watching quite a bit of Comcast SportsNet, which means you’ve seen the redundant promos for UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) bouts, where two hulky males hop into an octagonal ring, shirtless, shoeless — and obviously clueless — and try to beat the idiocy out of one another. It’s a clip that lasts about 30 seconds, but the violence is palpable. Heads and faces get pummeled to a bloody pulp.

Here are a few random thoughts for this time of year: Visibility. Seems like every winter I nag about some runners' lack of visibility after sunset, but I still see too many runners out there on the streets in minimally visible clothing. Though most of us have jackets or vests with reflective stripes or trim, some are less visible than others.

What should a cyclist do in winter to keep fit? It's the same question for a budget-strapped senior looking to get out of the house and get a little exercise without risking a slip on the ice. The answer may be on Marion Street just south of the El tracks at Greenline Wheels.
