Carl R. Waltenbaugh, 73, of Oak Park, died peacefully at home on Aug. 28, 2021. Born in Canton, Ohio on July 17, 1948 to Carl R. And Vivian O. (Rankin) Waltenbaugh, he married Karen (Jenkins) on April 14, 1973 in Bradley, Illinois. A graduate of Hoover High School (Class of 1966), he attended Mount Union College and graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio before graduating with a master’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1973 and PhD in 1975. He completed a post-doctorate at Harvard University in 1979 and spent the remainder of his career as a professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University until his retirement in 2016. He was also an avid woodworker, hobby genealogist and self-proclaimed sommelier.
Carl is survived by his wife, Karen and his children: Gretchen (Pinkerton) and her husband Justin, Heidi (Parker) and her husband Alyx, Karl and his wife, Amanda. He also leaves behind his sister, Susan (Haines), and his grandchildren, Eve, Zoe, Elliot, Jovi, Henry, Wren and Johan, as well as his beloved cats, Addison and Willson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of a visitation/funeral, Carl would inform you that science is real, life is too short to drink bad wine, and Nanu Nanu.
