There are times that writing is both so bold and so thoughtful that weeks afterwards, one feels compelled to say so. Ken Trainor’s Viewpoints column of Oct. 7, “Making sense of mass murder,” is an example of this. Gun violence and gun control are some of the more controversial and polarizing topics of our time, and yet there were truths in this column that individuals on different sides of the issues can embrace. Ken, I mouthed “yes!” more than once when I read the column. I was so pleased someone had the courage to say some of what you wrote. And I have thought of the column numerous times since. In what is surely in many ways a warped culture and one with greatly divided views on complex issues, it’s special to come across someone telling the ways he sees it and calling for action in a direct, respectful and unapologetic way.
