Retired Oak Park police commander Clement Harbour has been hired by Oak Park and River Forest High School to become its new residency compliance officer.

Harbour will join the school’s two-person RCO team that investigates questionable residency cases. The high school also contracts with investigative agency R.E. Walsh and Associates to oversee residency verifications. The Oak Brook firm was first hired in 2012; its contract was renewed last month for an additional year. Harbour will receive a $40-per-hour salary, according to the high school. The school decided to add another team member after one of the other RCOs requested decreased hours for next year, said OPRF spokesperson Karin Sullivan. In budget terms, she added, the three RCOs are splitting one full-time position.

Tradition of Excellence nominees

A Stanford mathematician, an environmental educator/activist, and a magazine writer are among the nominees for Oak Park and River Forest High School’s annual Tradition of Excellence Award. The 32nd awards will be presented at a student assembly this fall.

This year’s nominees include:

David Shurna is co-founder of the nonprofit Global Explorers, which provides travel for middle- and high-school students oversees. The 1991 OPRF graduate is also a writer, wildlife conservationist and environmental protection advocate.

The two alternate Tradition of Excellence nominees are financial analyst Gregory Cappelli (1985) and John Sparagana (1976), a visual artist and educator.

OPRF student selected for Rome trip by Pilgrim Passport

Myia Riley, an OPRF student, has been chosen to travel to Rome this summer, part of a program sponsored by a West Side organization that sends deserving students on overseas educational trips. Riley is among 10 students chosen by New Mount Pilgrim Church for its “Pilgrim Passport Mission Ministries” program. The awardees were announced at the West Garfield Park church’s Sunday service, July 13. The students are first-time travelers overseas. The program is for 13- to 19-year-old students who demonstrate “commitment to community service.”
