What does it mean to be a girl in 2014? Women experience gender-based discrimination and violence, and are bombarded with negative messages about not living up to the female ‘ideal.’ Through films, activities and discussion, adolescent girls will explore gender roles, stereotypes, and develop some tools to successfully navigate through the challenges of being a young woman in the 21st Century. The film series takes place at 4 pm on Sundays June 15 and July 13 at Dole Branch Library, 255 Augusta, Oak Park.

June 15: The movie, A Girl’s Life explores today’s challenges for teen girls, including bullying, social stress, and media messages.

July 13: Codes of Gender explores the role of gender in our everyday lives and how the use of advertising influences ideas about masculinity and femininity.
