Steve Edwards, the former voice of WBEZ’s “The Afternoon Shift” and “Eight Forty-Eight,” was named executive director of the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics (IOP) Thursday.

The 42-year-old Oak Park resident left WBEZ in September 2012 to become the deputy director of programming at IOP, an institute founded and directed by former senior advisor to President Obama, David Axelrod.

“I’m excited by the opportunity to build on the tremendous momentum we’ve established so far,” said Edwards in an interview with U. of C. reporter Wen Huang, “and I look forward to working with the team to offer programs that enrich our political discourse and inspire the next generation of political and public service leaders.”

Edwards’ role as executive director will take effect on March 31.
