Fenwick football head coach Gene Nudo has kiddingly referred to his team as the Traveling Wilburys this season. Considering the fact the Friars have already played games at Brother Rice and at Bishop Lynch in Dallas (Tex.), coupled with remaining games against Gordon Tech at Lane Tech, homecoming against Providence at Concordia University, and a tricky road game at De La Salle, the Friars obviously are willing to play any team anywhere.
Regardless of changing venues, winning has been a stablizing force for the Friars this season. Fenwick defeated St. Ignatius 31-6 Friday at St. Xavier University. Apparently, defense not only wins games/championships but it travels well to the southside of Chicago. The Friars shut down St. Ignatius with a stout effort defensively, highlighted by five sacks (including two by Jack Rafferty) and interecptions by Michael Cahill and Austin Gharib. Cahill’s pick was particularly pivotal for Fenwick, as the junior defensive back intercepted a St. Ignatius pass on the goal line.
Offensively, the usual suspects starred for Fenwick. Senior quarterback Gino Cavalieri completed 10 of 20 passes with touchdown tosses of 22 yards to Robert Spillane and 1 yard to Ryan Smith (three catches, 54 yards). Spillane added 61 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground off nine carries. Pat Donahue contributed 35 yards rushing including a 7-yard scamper into the end zone.
Richard Schoen continued his incredibly high level of all-around play with four catches for 124 yards and five returns for 143 yards on special teams.
Fenwick (5-0, 2-0 Chicago Catholic League White Division) will take on Gordon Tech Saturday (1:15 p.m.) at Lane Tech Stadium. The Friars take on Providence (Oct. 12) 1:30 p.m. at Concordia University the following weekend.
