Ellis Coleman’s story is one of rags to riches, although the riches have come in the form of glory attributed to the wrestler’s hard work and determination. That’s why local supporters have gotten together to help the 2009 graduate of OPRF High School on his quest to win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London in July.

Coleman qualified for the London Games by defeating Joe Betterman in the 60-kilogram Greco-Roman division at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Iowa City back in April.

At 20 years old, Coleman, who became an internet sensation with his Flying Squirrel move, will be the youngest wrestling competitor in London.

With the goal of raising funds for what Coleman needs to win gold, the Huskies Wrestling Family and Huskies Booster Club are sponsoring a fundraiser June 24 in Forest Park. The Celebration of Support will be held at Doc Ryan’s, 7432 W. Madison, on Sunday, June 24 from 3-4 p.m.

Tickets are $30 in advance at www.elliscolemangold.com and $35 at the door and include all-you-can-eat pizza, beer, wine and soda. Proceeds from each ticket ($15) goes to the 2012 Ellis Coleman Olympic Fund. For more information, visit: www.elliscolemangold.com
