Culver’s, the popular fast-food franchise known for its Butter Burgers, officially opened in Berwyn today, across the street from Oak Park.

All registers were open early this afternoon, as customers buzzed about, ordering everything from cheese curds to frozen custard.

The city of Berwyn was able to lure the chain here by using $975,000 in TIF dollars to buy a parcel of land at 6935-49 Roosevelt, kitty corner from Jewel, and reselling it to the owner of the Culver’s franchise. The restaurant takes the place of a stretch of vacant buildings, which formerly included a fruit stand and a bar.

Before the Berwyn location opened on Monday, the next closest Culver’s to Oak Park were about 5 miles away, in Lyons and Franklin Park.
