Village trustees recently agreed to outsource two more facets of village hall duties.
The board approved a contract last week with Chicago-based Elgin Sweeping Services for the company to sweep 105 miles of streets here. They’ll charge Oak Park about $107,000 a year for street sweeping and are offering to buy an old sweeper for $7,500.
In a related item, trustees approved a contract Monday with Teamsters Local 705, the union which represents the crew that does street sweeping, along with other village functions. The two-year contract calls for 1-percent annual increases to their base salary in both years.
The streets crew is losing two people through attrition, leaving its total workforce at six people. The crew had 18 employees as recently as 2008 but has been the victim of numerous cuts and outsourcing.
Village Manager Tom Barwin estimates that Oak Park will save about $40,000 by outsourcing street sweeping.
Also on Monday, trustees agreed on a contract to outsource payroll services at the village, moving the work to Automated Data Processing (or ADP). The move is one of the first steps in Oak Park transitioning away from its expensive and confusing human resources and accounting software program, PeopleSoft.
Officials estimate that outsourcing payroll will save Oak Park about $900,000 over the next 10 years.
