Rick Meegan’s newspaper stand under the viaduct at North Boulevard and Oak Park Avenue has been quiet the last several Sundays. Too quiet. Rick, who ran the stand for 35 years suffered a stroke a couple of years ago, and for awhile, his grandson (and friends) kept it going. When he couldn’t do it any longer, said Rick’s daughter Charlotte, the assistant to one of the delivery truck drivers (either Trib or Sun-Times, she couldn’t remember) took over. But the stand has been locked up for more than a month. Could this be the end of a long and cherished tradition?
In the meantime, those who need their Sunday paper fix (including the N.Y. Times) can find them at the Oak Park Food Mart, a half block south on Oak Park Avenue, or the 7/11 at Euclid and South Boulevard.
Charlotte said her Rick is “no better and no worse” since the stroke.
