A mismatch of major proportions led to a new McDonald’s Shootout single-game record and a fresh career high on Monday when Fenwick basketball star Tricia Liston poured in 43 points to help her Friars secure a 66-52 victory over St. Joseph Academy (Mo.).
The 6-foot-1, Duke-bound Liston was being guarded by a defender who was a good seven inches shorter than her. The senior forward surpassed her previous career-high of 41, scored back in November against Wheeling.
On Saturday, the Friars (18-2) crushed North Central Indianapolis 70-33. Liston led with 32 points, while Kathleen Roche added eight points. Kyra Navarette chipped in six points.
The Friars will try to stay perfect in the East Suburban Catholic Conference when they host Providence on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Trinity basketball
Trinity freshman Taylor Nazon scored a career-high 22 points to help lead the Blazers to a 64-56 victory over Lincoln-Way East at the McDonald’s Shootout on Friday.
Aided by the play of Nazon and sophomore Megan Podkowa (17 points), the Blazers took a 40-19 lead by halftime. But things went the other way for Trinity (15-5) in the second half. Ball-handling mistakes helped the Griffins cut the deficit to five by the middle of the fourth quarter and by three with less than two minutes left in the game. Accurate free-throw shooting on the part of the Blazers closed the door on the rally. Trinity made 6-of-8 at the charity stripe in the final minute.
Trinity, which this week returns last season’s leading scorer Taricka Linzy from a knee injury, will be the No. 1 seed when the GCAC Tournament begins next month.
Fenwick hockey
The Friars came away with two wins last week. On Saturday night, Fenwick edged St. Joseph of South Bend, Ind. 4-3. On Friday night, the Friars shut out St. Viator 3-0.
Against St. Joseph, Aidan Verbeke scored the game-winner on a power play with two minutes left. Greyson Feichtinger scored two goals in the win for the Friars, while Austin Zima added one.
Ryan Fitzgerald, Austin Zima and Kale Johnstone all scored in the win over St. Viator.
OPRF hockey
The Huskies iced Naperville Central 7-5 at Ridgeland Common on Jan. 10. Adrian Blamires led the team with a hat-trick. He also had two assists in the win. Other OPRF scorers included Stephen Weintrob, Riley Newman, Stephen Weik and Connor Schmidt. Goalkeeper William Ferdinand finished with 21 saves on the night.
The Huskies wrap up their regular season against Lincoln-Way East on Sunday. The 10 seniors on the team – Blamires, Joe Herner, John Michiels, Gar Lauerman, Nick Harrison, Weintrob, Weik, Kyle French, Schmidt and John Azuma – have been skating together since they were 7 years old.
