In three straight contests in three straight days last week the OPRF wrestling team downed five opponents.
The Huskies (13-2, 4-0) ended their barrage by sweeping a quad on Saturday in Oak Park. OPRF defeated Wheaton North 33-16, Libertville 31-22 and St. Rita 47-22. On Friday, the Huskies toppled West Suburban (Silver) Conference foe Glenbard West 68-3, a victory that came on the heals of a hard-fought 38-31 win over Hinsdale Central the night before.
Frankie Picchiotti (125 pounds), Chris Dardanes (135), Nick Dardanes (145), Charlie Johnson (152) and Sammy Brooks (160) led the Huskies in the quad, all scoring three victories with no losses. Other winners for OPRF included Colin Rogers (119), Anthony Manetti (140) Brock Friesen (171) and LaQuan Hightower, who had returned earlier in the week from an injury that had him miss the entire first half of the season. Hightower (215) defeated Libertyville’s Luke Miller by decision. Miller was ranked ninth in the state.
In Glen Ellyn on Friday against Glenbard West, the Huskies kept their conference win-streak (16) alive by winning 13 of 14 bouts. The trouncing of the Hilltoppers followed a big win over Hinsdale Central, who was also undefeated in the conference.
After two losses, the Huskies won six of the next seven matches to lead the Red Devils 26-13. Picchiotti won by forcing a fall (3:06) and Chirino Watson scored an overtime victory during the run. Chris Dardanes won my major decision, while Nick Dardanes won by forcing a fall.
Ben Brooks and Hightower closed the door on the Red Devils by pinning their opponents in their respective weight classes.
OPRF travels to Hillside on Friday to take on Proviso West. On Saturday, the Huskies go to work on another quad at New Trier. The team hosts Lyons Township on Jan. 22 (6 p.m.) for its final conference dual match.
