I can’t believe this happened to him and to assume he was dumpster diving is an insult to him and his friends. [Homeless man crushed in garbage compactor, News Aug. 13]

I knew this man personally and how he was and regardless of the troubles of his past, he was a decent human being. The moral and decent thing to do would have been to point out the horrific and tragic way in which he died. What did his record or previous interactions with the police have to do with anything? We’re supposed to care less or justify his death because he got in trouble before? What if he was seeking shelter from the storm? What if he had nowhere to go because no one would help him? What about reporting how maybe the store policy should always be to check the dumpster before flipping a switch on the inside of the store?

What if that was a child playing who got killed? Would the story have been different, more heartfelt? I am devastated at his passing as well as the way this article was done in such heartless, poor taste.
