Oak Park police have received blood and urine test results from the Illinois State Police forensic crime lab on the driver of the car that struck and fatally injured Oak Parker Susan McMahon, Sept. 13. Police have also met with officials from the state’s attorney’s office twice, but would not confirm what charges, if any, had been brought against the driver, a 23-year-old Aurora man.
“The crash reconstruction has been completed,” said Oak Park Deputy Chief Bob Scianna. “And we’ve had a couple of conferences with the state’s attorney’s office.”
Scianna also confirmed that officers have spoken with the driver’s family, which has in turn contacted the man.
“We’re out there trying to locate him,” said Scianna.
The afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 13, the Aurora man was allegedly driving a 1990 Buick Riviera on the 300 block of Wisconsin Avenue with a revoked driver’s license due to a DUI conviction. Police say the car was traveling southbound when it crossed over into the northbound lane and struck McMahon as she was removing groceries from her car. She suffered massive internal injuries and died five days later at Loyola Medical Center.
The wait has been tough on McMahon’s friends at the Oak Park village hall. Village Clerk Sandra Sokol said that while she believes police are doing all they can, it’s frustrating none the less.
“I wish I knew,” Sokol said of any developments. “We feel it’s been slow.”
Sokol said she’s aware investigators are being cautious.
“I’ve been told they want to do it right,” she said.
McMahon’s brother, Curtis Uthene, said he believes police have a strong case, and has placed his faith in the authorities.
“I’m leaving it in the hands of the Oak Park police,” he said. “I don’t see why there should be any problems as far as judicial proceedings.”
