Sports Illustrated’s website, si.com, last week named Fenwick High School the best athletic program in the state of Illinois for the 2006-07 school year.

The recognition came in an article by Kevin Armstrong and John Mahoney, which ran on June 19 and featured the 50 best high school athletic programs in the country. The selection was based on success on and off the field, including state championships and the number of Division-I scholarship athletes.

Fenwick recently completed one of the most successful athletic years in its history with state championships in girl’s basketball and boy’s water polo. Six student-athletes were awarded Division I scholarships.

“This recognition is a reflection of the quality and efforts of the coaching staffs,” said Athletic Director Mike Curtin through a press release issued by the school. “It also shows the support and commitment of the administration of Fenwick.”

Thirty-seven Fenwick students were named to all-state or equivalent sports teams during the past year and three coaches were named state coach-of-the-year.

Fenwick also finished runner-up in hockey, and girl’s water polo.
