The Oak Park and River Forest girls basketball team honored its veterans on Senior Night in Oak Park with a 62-49 victory over York Saturday.
Nearly every OPRF player scored in the game as the Huskies upped their West Suburban (Silver) Conference mark to 8-3 and put together a three-game winning streak.
Trailing 27-21 at halftime, the Huskies sparked in the third quarter to take a 46-37 lead going into the final period. The team’s third quarter
blitz is becoming a staple of the Huskies, who downed Glenbard West
52-46 on Friday night in the same fashion.
“We just seem to be shining lately in the third quarter,” said OPRF head coach Bob Biggins. “We play better defense and we attack the ball more. It’s like they catch a second wind.”
The Huskies were able to hold on against York despite making just 8 of 15 free throws in the fourth.
“I would definitely like to see that improve,” said Biggins of his team’s performance at the charity stripe. “But on the plus side we did score 16 points in the final period, which is a high number for us.”
Kendal Dirkin led the Huskies in all three games last week, including a 42-37 win over Fenton on Jan. 24. Dirkin had 11 points in the win over York and in the win over Fenton.
Abby Prescott scored 12 points in the win over Glenbard West, while Cailey Hague had nine points.
The Huskies will travel to Downers Grove North on Friday for their final conference game of the season.
